Conference Design

GIC 2011 provided an opportunity for implementation policy makers, practitioners, and scientists from around the world to develop relationships with each other while sharing their knowledge and collaborating around implementation, organizational change, and system transformation.

Brian_Mittman_PlenaryThe structure of GIC 2011 included three main components: plenary presentations, practice groups, and presentation clusters.

Plenary Presentations

Designed to share and integrate implementation knowledge, one to two plenary presentations were scheduled for each morning of the conference.

Practice_Group_DiscussionPractice Groups

Formation of active practice groups is a major goal of the GIC. Five practice groups were established based on different roles within the field of implementation:

  • Policy makers
  • Researchers
  • Organizational leaders
  • Purveyors
  • Practitioners

Laying the Groundwork

These groups began to form during the registration process so that participants could begin developing relationships, exchanging information, defining key issues, and holding virtual meetings prior to the conference. Laying this groundwork enabled the practice groups to maximize their face-to-face time at the GIC.

Ongoing Collaboration

Between biennial GICs, each practice group will continue to collaborate, both virtually and in person. The GIC intends to provide facilitation and support to the inter-conference communications within and across practice groups. Results of the inter-conference meetings will help shape the agenda for GIC 2013.

Practice Group Conference Activities

Each afternoon at the conference included a practice group plenary sessions and  practice group breakout meetings.

  • Practice group plenary sessions began with a presentation that highlighted major advances and issues related to that group's focus. These presentations were followed by a facilitated discussion. The goal of these sessions was to hone the topics for discussion, debate, and consideration for next steps to advance the field.
  • Practice group breakout sessions explored barriers and issues specific to each practice group and generated next steps or solutions.

Presentation ClustersPresentation_Cluster

In each themed cluster, a small group of presenters shared their data, experiences, and ideas through informal poster presentations and discussions with participants.

Eighteen to twenty clusters were scheduled each evening of the conference, and participants visited different clusters depending on their areas of interest.
